Idea of the Week: Start Your Own Newsletter
Today’s story is about someone who makes money…
by writing birthday card messages online.
Yep. That’s the entire business.
A few years ago, a guy named John noticed something strange.
Every time his friends had to write a card — birthday, anniversary, condolences — they’d Google things like:
“Funny birthday wishes for wife”
“Romantic anniversary message”
“Short birthday card for boss” etc.
And every time, Google showed the same kind of websites: plain text lists of greeting messages.
No fancy graphics, no influencer, no AI.
Just hundreds of lines of simple, heartfelt sentences.
And those pages had ads all over them.
So John thought, “If Google is ranking these, someone’s making money.”
He opened WordPress, bought a $10 domain, and started a site called WishesMsg.com.
He began posting simple lists like:
100+ Birthday Messages for Mom
50+ Funny Wishes for Friends
80+ Wedding Congratulations Texts
Each article was basically 300–400 lines of short sentences.
Fast forward a few years…
WishesMsg.com now gets over 2 million visits every month, mostly from Google.
They rank for every “birthday message” keyword imaginable. They monetize entirely with display ads.
At an estimated $6–$8 RPM, that’s $12,000–$16,000 per month, just from people reading card messages.
Let’s pause for a second.
A business that literally writes “Happy Birthday, have a great day” — and makes more than most tech startups.
Insane, right?
But it makes sense when you think about it.
Billions of people send messages every year. They need ideas. They search on Google.
It’s evergreen traffic. It never dies. Here’s what I find fascinating:
While most people are fighting to write 5,000-word essays for SEO,
John built a micro-empire on short, emotional sentences.
He didn’t build an audience.
He didn’t create a YouTube channel.
He didn’t even show his face.
He just helped people say nice things. That’s it. Now, imagine replicating this in other niches:
Condolence Messages → “What to write in sympathy cards”
Love Letters → “Short love message for him/her”
Thank You Notes for Teachers
Best Captions for Instagram Bios
Quotes for Pet Lovers
Same structure. Same playbook. Different keywords.
And once you get traffic, you turn on AdSense or Ezoic — and that’s the whole business.
Interesting, right?
That’s your alley dispatch for the week. Next one drops soon.
