Productivity: Follow a strict rule

It’s your first day in army camp. Wake-up is 6:00 a.m. sharp. If you don’t get up, cold water will be splashed in your face. No mercy. You hesitate for a second, thinking you can steal a few more minutes of rest, but before you know it, cold water hits your face. You’re wide awake now, shivering, heart racing. Lesson learned.

Now picture the same thing at home. The alarm rings at 6:00 a.m., you hit snooze, roll over, and drift back to sleep. No one splashes water this time, but something still slips away: momentum, discipline, trust in yourself.

Next day in camp, will you sleep in again? No chance.

So, follow a strict rule.

Lesson: Structure + habit-building > mere motivation.

Idea of the Week:

Today’s story is about math. But not the boring kind.

It’s about a guy who built a simple calculator website  and turned it into a $10,000/month passive income.A few years ago, a developer named Erik noticed something strange.

Every time he Googled “BMI calculator” or “loan calculator,” dozens of random websites showed up — all ugly, all filled with ads  and yet somehow, all ranking high on Google. So he did what any curious internet builder would do. He built his own.

  • A plain, single-page BMI calculator.

  • Then a mortgage calculator.

  • Then a calorie calculator.

All clean, fast, and ad-optimized. He didn’t write blogs, he didn’t chase backlinks. He just built tools.

And people loved it. Because when someone searches for a “mortgage calculator,” they don’t want to read a 2,000-word SEO article.

They just want the calculator. Fast-forward to today. Erik’s website "Calculator.net" now gets over 40 million visits every month (yes, million).

That’s roughly the same traffic as Airbnb or Zoom. With display ads across the site, he reportedly earns $10,000–$12,000 USD per month, entirely from passive ad revenue.

All from simple calculators built once and hosted forever. So what can we learn from Erik?

Utility > Content

While the world writes blogs and scripts, Erik built tools.

People don’t bookmark blogs. They bookmark tools.

Simplicity scales.

Each calculator page is lightweight, loads in under 0.3 seconds, and ranks like a charm because Google loves speed and usability.

Evergreen demand.

Calculators don’t trend — they’re timeless. People will still Google “BMI calculator” in 2050.

Zero maintenance.

No social media, no new content every week, no newsletters. Once it’s built, it just works.

Now imagine applying this idea in smaller niches:

  • A tax calculator for freelancers in India.

  • A protein calculator for gym beginners.

  • A ROI calculator for Tiktok ads.

You could build 5 of these over a weekend with GPT and some HTML.

Rank them. Add AdSense.

That’s your alley dispatch for the week. Next one drops soon.
